Perfect Plants Sky Pencil Holly (Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil') is a striking narrow, columnar evergreen shrub that brings bold vertical structure and year-round beauty to any landscape. Introduced in 1992 by the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., this refined Japanese holly maintains its naturally upright, pencil-thin form without pruning, making it as low maintenance as it is eye-catching. Dark green foliage stays lush through every season, and dainty creamy white flowers emerge in early spring for a delicate seasonal accent. Mature plants reach 8-10 feet tall while staying just 2-3 feet wide, making Sky Pencil Holly an ideal solution for narrow spaces, entryways, privacy screens, and formal hedges. It also performs beautifully when planted in large containers for patio or courtyard settings. Once established, this cold hardy holly is drought tolerant and thrives in full sun to partial shade across USDA zones 5-9. Whether used as a vertical accent, a living architectural element, or a space-saving privacy planting, Sky Pencil Holly delivers structure, elegance, and effortless performance in landscapes large and small.
